Chikitsak Samuha
(Estd. 1908)
52, Sadashiv Cross Lane, Girgaon, Mumbai- 400004.
Like the beginning of all great things, the beginning of Chikitsak Samuha has been very small and would appear inconspicuous. Dr. Vitthal Bhaskar Sukhtankar, Shri. Jagannath Vasudev Pilgaonkar and Shri. Bapu Mangesh Kabadi who started with a social club founded Chikitsak Samuha with the idea of doing some social service within a limited field. This idea took the concrete shape of running a school when they took over a neighbouring Primary School founded by Shri. Vasudev Moreshwar Potdar. The promoters were persons of meager means, the finances were weak but their ambition was strong. They found that they had taken over a school in tottering condition. With great courage they succeeded in stabilizing it.
By 1916,the primary school had expanded into a Secondary School and by 1918 the first batch of students was sent up to the University Examination- the dreaded 'Matriculation'.
In the year 1921, the Late Shri. Kashinath Bhavanishankar Sukhtankar won the honour of securing the Jagannath Shankarsett Sanskrit Scholarship and brought the school on the University HonoUirs List. The next year, the Late Shri. P. M. Lad, I.C.S. stood first inthe Matriculation Examination of the Bombay University.
The school which was conducted in a rented premises at Girgaum Road, Sanzgiri Bhuwan shifted to its own building at Sadashiv Street Cross Lane and stands as a monument to the untiring and zealous efforts of number of social workers who enabled the Samuha to fulfill this ambition. This idea of having its own building was inspired by a timely donation of Rs.1 Lakh from the Late Shri. Vishnu Janardan Shirolkar which enabled the Samuha to purchase the required land with the assistance of Late Shri. Bhairaonath Dinanath Dalvi.
With this background of achievements in the pre-primary, primary and secondary stages of education, it is but natural that the Samuha should desire to enter the field of higher education. In the year 1964, the Samuha started an Arts and Science College at Goregaon in memory of Sir Sitaram and Lady Shantabai Patkar. The donation in the form of land at Goregaon came from Smt. Motiben Dalvi. Shri. A. N. Kothare, a distinguished Professor of Chemistry agreed to be the Principal of the college and Prof. V. M. Palekar the all-known Professor of Physics joined as the Vice-Principal.
In 1986, Chikitsak Samuha started Commerce College which was named as V. P. Varde College of Commerce and Economics.
Today Chikitsak Samuha has
{1) Telang Balodyan, (2) Potdar Primary School {3) Shirolkar High School at Girgaon, Mumbai AND Patkar-Varde College at Goregaon, Mumbai.
